Guinea pigs are intelligent, curious animals that thrive in environments that allow them to express natural behaviours. Enrichment isn’t just a luxury—it’s essential for their physical and mental wellbeing. In this blog, we explore practical enrichment ideas, with a special focus on tunnels and feeding enrichment.

Tunnel Time: Encouraging Exploration and Security

Tunnels mimic the burrows guinea pigs would use in the wild, offering both security and stimulation. They love to dart through them, hide, nap, and even play chase with companions.

Ideas for tunnel enrichment:

  • Hay tunnels: Edible and fun—double the enrichment!
  • Fabric or fleece tunnels: Soft and washable, ideal for indoor setups.
  • Cardboard tubes: Cheap and recyclable, but monitor for chewing.
  • Modular play tunnels: Connectable sections that create mazes and encourage exploration.

Rotate tunnel types and positions regularly to keep things fresh and exciting.

Feeding Enrichment: Making Mealtimes Meaningful

Guinea pigs are natural foragers. Instead of placing food in a bowl, try these enrichment ideas to encourage natural feeding behaviours:

Foraging ideas:

  • Scatter feeding: Hide veggies and pellets around their enclosure.
  • Hay-stuffed toys: Fill cardboard tubes or paper bags with hay and herbs.
  • Treat balls: Encourage movement and problem-solving.
  • Vegetable kebabs: Thread veggies onto safe skewers and hang them at different heights.

These activities slow down feeding, reduce boredom, and promote physical activity.

Why Enrichment Matters

Enrichment helps prevent:

  • Obesity from lack of movement
  • Stress and anxiety from boredom or lack of hiding spaces
  • Behavioural issues like chewing cage bars or aggression

It also strengthens the bond between guinea pigs and their caregivers, making daily interactions more rewarding.
