Feeding
We recommend ad libitum feeding of a high-quality dust-extracted feeding hay and grass (hay and grass should comprise 85-90% of a guinea pig’s diet), a small portion of a high-quality guinea pig pelleted food and a small portion of vegetables (around one cup per day).
Guinea pigs cannot produce their own vitamin C, so they require a dietary source. Supplementing their diet with a high-quality pellet food and including vitamin C-rich vegetables such as red bell peppers and romaine lettuce is recommended.
Kale and parsley are also great sources of vitamin C, but should be fed sparingly since they are high in calcium. A diet too high in calcium can contribute to potential urinary issues in guinea pigs.
